Great day. Inspired day. Spent time with two friends I haven't seen in a long time. I had brunch with Maya who is an amazing (biracial) singer who should know if you don't already. I played side-kick to her lead in a low-budget feature film that made the festival circuit and won some awards. I saw Maya today and was more in awe of her than ever. She's making her living as an artist and making her art with meaning. I hope we can raise the money to bring her to L.A. for the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival. She's got a new show with Vanessa Hidary called Culture Bandit Soul. Check it out.
And then I got to hang out with Kate Hill Cantrill who is an amazing writer. She's made her name as a flash fiction writer and was the inspiration for my first short fiction piece. She's re-making lit readings into something fun and visual and inspired.
So I see these two women today and think: how did it get so lucky? to know such cool people? Maybe I am supposed to think I am the cool person--met my goal: the book is being published? Nope, these women are my mileposts. Confident and successful in their art which has meaning. That's my mirror.
