Loving Day is this weekend! How are you celebrating?
If you've been following this blog, you know that I will be up to my eyeballs with work helping to make sure that the 4th Annual Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival which I co-founded with Fanshen Cox goes off without a hitch. (The Festival is June 11-12, 2011 at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles.
But first, what is Loving Day, you ask? It is the brainchild of the awesome Ken Tanabe. It started off as his Master's Thesis Project but has become a national grassroots celebration of the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Loving v. Virginia, which affirmed the right of people of different races to marry. In New York City, Ken has organized an annual 1000-person plus barbecue FREE -- this year it will be held June 12. June 12 is the official date of the Loving decision.
At the Festival, we are celebrating Loving Day on June 11 at 6:30pm with a special reception preceding the Loving Prize presentation and Mixed Unplugged, a live performance with spoken word, poetry, comedy and song. Not to mention we will be celebrating all weekend. It's a Festival afterall! We have film screenings, readings, and workshops. And all of it--every bit of it is free. If you're near Southern California, the Festival is where you want to be. So save your spot now!
And if you're not: here's an excellent resource for celebrations around the country!
